LONDON: US and UK drug makers are working to crack down on the illicit trade of prescription drugs such as Viagra, the maker of which is expected to sell more than £2bn by 2029.
Viagra, sold under the brand name Cialis, is the world’s most powerful drug for treating erectile dysfunction.
The drugs, which are made by Eli Lilly’s pharmaceutical giant Lilly, also include a range of drugs used to treat other health conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
In June, Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced it was cracking down on the illegal trade of prescription drugs sold in Britain.
A total of 10.9 million people suffer from erectile dysfunction, affecting more than 6.9 million Britons.
The MHRA said there were ‘significant risks’ to patients’ health and the drugs ‘should not be used to treat or prevent serious underlying conditions’.
“This decision is the latest step in efforts to curb the illegal trade of prescription drugs in the UK,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s chief executive.
“We are committed to fighting against counterfeit and substandard medicines and will continue to do so.”

The MHRA said in a letter to the UK health authorities that its ‘counterfeit drugs’ scheme could be a ‘disproportionate deterrent’ to people taking prescription drugs for health reasons.

‘This decision is a major step in the fight against counterfeit drugs and is being taken out of the public purse.’
